A tree without its roots is a dead tree. So to, the Bible without its roots is very similar. I was just thinking about the word "sin" today and I have been thinking about how offended people get whenever this word is mentioned. I seriously believe that most people do not fully understand what "sin" in fact is, or they are just convicted because their life is not in sync with the word of God.
I'm willing to bet that many people believe that sin is a self righteous word that others use to make them look better than others! Now this is a big reason why it's so important to SEEK what God says, rather than what people say, in order to find the truth of the matter. The word "sin" was first written in Hebrew because this was the original language that the Bible was written in. Now if you understand the Hebrew meaning of the word "sin," you will understand quite clearly what "sin" in fact is. Unfortunately, the English language does a very poor job defining it and this fact has given our culture a foot hold in misinterpret the actual definition of the word, from the original source!
So here it is, the word "sin" in Hebrew is, חָטָא, and is pronounced "chata." This word literally translates into the English language as "missing the mark." If we apply the proper context to this word we will know that "Sin" was first put into the Torah, (First five books of the Bible) which God himself gave Moses, to give to the Hebrew people. At the time the Torah was given, the Hebrew people were the only people who believed in only One God. (Yup...while pretty much everyone else was hacking off limbs of their new born's to appease the God's, the Hebrew people had the real deal.)
Now keep in mind that the word "Torah" is a Hebrew word which means "teaching!" God gave his very teaching, his words to the Hebrew people. He did this now for what reason? To TEACH them! So now, being that the word sin literally translates to "missing the mark," and Torah literally translates to "teaching," it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who's mark you are missing. In fact the conclusion is obvious when the very word comes from THEIR OWN teaching!
So here it i now, how is it that everyone wants to debate what "sin" is, if the word itself means "missing God's mark?" God himself defined it, in His very own teaching that he gave. This teaching is not only just for people of Hebrew origin, but for everyone! You can't simply choose to debate what "sin" is, if you believe in God's teaching can you? (Adherence to the Bible.) You can't just say "well, I believe that murder is not a sin." If in the Bible it is clear that murder is in fact, "missing God's mark."
The problem is that we have not esteemed God's word as being from God himself. I believe this is the key to much of the confusion within our culture and our world today. A person can either believe the Bible is God's teaching or not. If you believe the Bible is from God, then you can't change it. If the Bible is not from God, then why do you even care what "sin" is defined as, since the word itself originates from a book that you don't even believe in? It would be outright silly if someone is going to tell me what the definition of sin is, other than giving me the definition in the book (Bible/Torah) that invented the very word and context of the word!
It's unfortunate how much of what we call "Christianity" today has been cut off from it's ROOTS. Do you have to learn Hebrew to believe and adhere to the Bible? No, but understanding and studying a little Hebrew might get a lot of things the Bible speaks on, "clicking." Did Jesus redefine what sin is? No, because Jesus is God. In fact, Jesus was really the one who gave the Torah to Moses in the first place! (He just went under YHWH, a the concealed name that is even concealed in the Hebrew language, evident in the Hebrew texts!) (This is a whole different subject that would require a Bible study...lets get back on track.)
Jesus actually gave us a more complete definition of what sin is, in the New Testament or New Covenant. Jesus said that if you think about doing the act of missing God's mark in your mind, it's the same as you doing the very act! Yes, Jesus sure did! All you have to do is read Matthew 5:28 to see that! So come on now...lets esteem God's word and get off the lies that our culture and our world are trying to tell us. At the end of the day people, God's word CONVICTS people, it's alive and active and pierces the human heart! (Hebrews 4:12) It does this so much so that everyone who is not living by it either wants to rationalize it or CHANGE it! They want to redefine God and his word, to make themselves feel better!
We can't change God's word. God's word will not "move" for us, we must "move" for it! In fact, God tells us that we must be broken of ourselves BEFORE we come to Him, meaning that God wants us to repent and admit that we fall short of keeping His teachings. (Acts 2:38) He wants us to humble our own selves before Him, and say "Hey God, you are Holy...I can't do this, I need your help, I'm a mess." That's it! If we come to Him in pride and this attitude that he is outdated and that we know better than Him...(We know more than God, imagine that?) He will reject us! We need to HUMBLE our own selves to what God says! It is an insult to ask the one God, who created us, to humble himself for us. The crazy thing is that He already did! In fact, He came down as a man and went through hell on earth for us!
So we are all without excuses people. Lets get over our pride and this ridiculous idea that we know more than God. Everything I am writing right now, I did not just one day wake up knowing. No, I had to humble my own self and seek out God and study his teaching! God himself tells us in Luke 14:11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Lets Humble ourselves before Jesus and esteem what he has to say. Lets envision even our "good" deeds as filth and put on His righteousness. Isaiah 64:6
At the end of the day, "sin" should point us to Jesus. In fact, it's ALL about Jesus. We need to uproot the root of sin in our lives and replace it with the Root of David! Jesus is the Root and the Offspring of David! (Revelation 22:16) We need to start seeing Jesus as heaven, because only in Christ is our reward and our promise. (Life and Heaven) (Galatians 3:16)
It's all about Jesus, the one God of Israel and the hope of the world!
